College Remedial Coursework
ACT scores not high enough? Here is a way to take the required remedial courses at a lower cost.
To be eligible for college level courses in South Dakota, students must score at least an 18 in English and a 20 in math on their ACT's, or have scored at least 2583 in English and 2628 in Math on their 2016-17 11th grade Smarter Balanced test. If they do not meet these scores on their tests, they must take remedial classes in college, which cost time and money. The link below leads to options that allow students to take needed remedial classes at a lower cost, prior to going to a post-secondary school. If successfully completed, students can enter directly into college-level classes.
Beginning July 1, 2013, state funding is available to cover the cost of approximately 800 course enrollments.
Howard seniors may take these during the school day, if they have already met the Howard School credit requirements (24 credits) to graduate. It is recommended that students take the 6-month courses, even if they don't plan to spend that much time taking them, as they are self-paced. Students must finish the courses by July 1st, so the information may be sent out to the appropriate college or university. High school seniors enrolled in public school districts who complete the remedial coursework during their registered time frame are eligible for reimbursement for the full cost of up to three separate courses, if taken through SD Virtual School.
*See Mr. Lee to register for a course.
